Chicago-based United Airlines is one of the world’s largest airlines, operating services to more destinations than any of its competitors. In total, flights depart from the airline’s nine hubs in the United States, Japan and Guam, to 373 destinations worldwide, including 60 countries in all six inhabited continents – a fact that only a handful of airlines can lay claim to.
United Airlines’ origins could not be more different than the present day. Initially established as Varney Air Lines, the company operated the US’ first contract air mail service in 1926, which was in itself a moment of history, being the first scheduled flight in the country. United Airlines was borne of the merger of Varney Air Lines with Boeing Air Transport, another air mail airline, three years later.
United Airlines currently operates 709 aircraft, carrying 140 million passengers annually and is a member of the Star Alliance Network, the world’s largest airline alliance.
