Is Air India a good airline?
Air India is India's flag carrier and a member of Star Alliance. Since being acquired by the Tata Group in 2022, the airline has been undergoing a major transformation — new aircraft, new cabins, and improved service standards. On long-haul routes it operates Airbus A350s, Boeing 787s, and Boeing 777s. It's one of the few airlines flying nonstop between India and Australia — alongside Qantas — and it's increasingly competitive on price while the product continues to improve.
Does Air India fly direct from Australia?
Yes — Air India operates daily nonstop flights from Sydney to Delhi on the Boeing 787. Melbourne has nonstop service to Delhi increasing to daily from July 2026 on the Boeing 777, plus a three-times-weekly Mumbai–Melbourne service. From Delhi or Mumbai, you can connect onward to cities across India, and Air India also serves destinations in Europe, North America, and Asia from its hubs.
What baggage allowance does Air India offer?
On international flights to and from Australia, Economy passengers get two checked bags at up to 23kg each. Business Class gets two bags at 32kg each. Carry-on is one bag up to 8kg for Economy, or up to 12kg for Business and First. The two-bag Economy allowance is solid value, especially if you're visiting family or shopping in India and need the extra space.
Does Air India include meals and entertainment?
Yes — all fares include complimentary meals and drinks on long-haul flights, including alcohol on most international routes. You'll get a choice of Indian and continental dishes. Every seat has a personal entertainment screen on widebody aircraft. Wi-Fi is available on the newer A350 and 787-9 fleet, with the airline trialling free Wi-Fi on select aircraft.
What cabin classes does Air India offer?
Air India is the only Indian carrier offering up to four cabin classes — First, Business, Premium Economy, and Economy. On the A350, Business Class features 28 private suites in a 1-2-1 layout with sliding doors and lie-flat beds. Premium Economy offers wider seats with 38 inches of legroom. The Boeing 777 is being reconfigured with First Class suites, while retrofitted 787s are getting new 1-2-1 business class seats with direct aisle access.
Can I earn frequent flyer points on Air India?
Air India's loyalty programme is Maharaja Club. As a Star Alliance member, you can also earn and redeem miles with partners like Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer, United MileagePlus, Lufthansa Miles & More, and Air New Zealand Airpoints. For Australian travellers, the Singapore Airlines connection is particularly handy — you can credit Air India flights to KrisFlyer or vice versa.
Is Air India undergoing changes?
Yes — Air India is in the middle of a major transformation called Vihaan.AI. The airline has ordered 470 new aircraft (250 Airbus, 220 Boeing), with deliveries underway. Existing 787s and 777s are being retrofitted with completely new interiors. New A350s are already flying with their latest business class suites. The product is changing rapidly, so an Air India flight today can be a very different experience from one on an older unrenovated aircraft — check your aircraft type when booking.
What is the Air India group?
Air India is owned by the Tata Group, with Singapore Airlines holding a 25.1% stake following the merger with Vistara in November 2024. The group also includes Air India Express, a low-cost carrier operating shorter routes across India, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia. Together, the two airlines operate over 8,300 weekly flights to more than 100 destinations with a fleet of around 300 aircraft.
How do I find cheap Air India flights?
Track Air India fares on IWantThatFlight and set up alerts for Sydney or Melbourne to Delhi. Air India is often the most direct and competitively priced option between Australia and India, especially with the two free checked bags in Economy. If you're heading beyond India to Europe or North America, compare Air India's one-stop fares via Delhi — they can undercut carriers routing through the Middle East or Southeast Asia.
Operating as the flag carrier of India, Air India is one of the oldest airlines in the world. Founded in 1930 as Tata Airlines, it now has a fleet of Boeing and Airbus aircraft which fly to both domestic and international locations. As a member of the world’s largest global airline alliance, Star Alliance, Air India has an extensive travel network.
With two major Indian hubs at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport and Indira Ghandi International Airport, Air India serves 60 domestic and 31 international destinations, including countries in North America, Australia and Europe.
Air India’s frequent flyer program, Flying Returns, is one of the most rewarding schemes for the region. Bonus miles and mileage points, for example, are earned on premium fares such as First Class, Business Class and full-fare economy. In 2008, Air India also gained recognition at the Galileo Express TravelWorld Awards when they received the Best Short-Haul International Airline accolade.
