San Francisco Travel InformationAlthough the Bay Area is home to a massive 7.1 million people, San Francisco itself is relatively compact, with just over approximately 800,000 citizens. Once owned by the Spanish, this part of California then became part of Mexico. The city then grew thanks to the California Gold Rush of 1848, and many people flocked to the area from all over the world to seek their fortune. The legacy of immigration continues today, with one of the largest Chinese communities outside Asia settled in the city's atmospheric and authentic China Town.
San Francisco has its own unique microclimate, with temperatures rarely varying beyond 15-25 degrees Celsius for much of the year, which can be a sweet relief after experiencing more sweltering Californian conditions inland. The warmest months are fromJune to September, with the summer or early autumn being an ideal time to visit.
The city is famously and fabulously hilly, with iconic trams to wisk you to the top of places such as Telegraph Hill (home to some gorgeous cottages and a flock of wild parrots). For a taste of Californian Latino culture, head to the city's Mission district- it's famous for its murals as much as its superlative Latin American food and music.
It wouldn't be a trip to San Francisco if you didn't stop to take in the Golden Gate Bridge. One of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World, the bridge is the first thing you see when entering the city from the north, while the cable cars connecting Fisherman's Wharf and Market street are another quintessentially San Franciscan experience. Fishermen still bring the day's catch in at the wharf, and it's a good place to begin any tour of the city. Boats also leave Fisherman's Wharf on trips to the notorious Alcatraz prison island.
Castro is the area at the centre of San Francisco's thriving LGBT scene (Lesbian, Gay, Bi, Trans), and is the place to find buzzing bars alongside shops, restaurants, theatres, and other entertainment. Haight Ashbury, a little further west, was the epicentre of the hippie movement in the 1960s, and while it has since become slightly adulterated by the tourist trade, there are still plenty of shops and cafes selling everything from flowers for your hair to tie-dye dresses and artisan organic coffees. San Francisco is also awash with great museums, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art being among the most popular.
