Ryanair Airlines

Ryanair is a well-known low-cost or ‘budget’ airline which is based in Ireland, but operates services across Europe, with its primary hubs at Dublin Airport and London Stansted Airport. The airline’s success has been linked to the deregulation of the industry, which has enabled it to expand rapidly while offering comparatively low fares.

Ryanair was founded in 1985 with a single route from London Gatwick to Waterford, Ireland, in an attempt to undermine the dominance of Aer Lingus and British Airways on London-Ireland routes. Industry deregulation and the advent of internet sales enabled Ryanair to undercut its rivals by offering cheaper fares, leading to the company carrying more passengers in 2014 (81.7 million) than any other airline in Europe. Ryanair operates over 300 Boeing 737-800 aircraft, serving 30 countries.

To date, the only safety incident involving a Ryanair aircraft was a bird strike, resulting in an emergency landing at Rome Ciampino Airport in 2013 but the airline otherwise has an unblemished safety record.
